Our Art 101 class recently visited the MoMA PS1 to primarily view the artwork of Henry Taylor and some other independent artists. Some of the independent artists viewed were Darren Bader and the controversial Clifford Owens. Below, I will discuss the works of art from the museum.
The artwork of Henry Taylor is what I appreciated most. Even though some his work seemed old, I still appreciated the culture of his work. The art reminded me of Harlem history and a “brother” trying to make it the art world. The art piece that I liked most from Henry was “Angola”, designed in 2009. The piece showed a little snip of history of the country Angola.
I appreciate that Henry Taylor post his art the way he does, though unfortunately I was quite disappointed at some of the art work that was displayed to the public. I wanted to see more talent in the art. The piece of “Fist and Fury” seemed mediocre, unorganized and boring. What confused me the most what the type of color used and meaning of the picture. But again, at the same time, I appreciate and looked at his work with an open mind. Not all work is going to be perfect.
Later, we stumbled upon the Clifford Owens collection and works. I can say that was a surprised to look at. Some of the work was offensive to watch. The feelings were uncomfortable. Owens video art was out of this world and very confusing. What was confusing is what message he was trying to convey. Seemed that the message to convey what to get attention from doing bizarre acts. Though I disliked his work, I appreciated him for showing there is nothing perfect and that modern art work can be displayed in any manner.
The works of art spoken about above all send a different message to the viewer. What I learned most is to accept that not everyone will be perfect with what they offer to the public. There are many art pieces and painting that will be disliked and misunderstood through my journey of learning about art.
